About the Utility Dividend Stocks list

Utilities are the archetypal income sector. Regulated electricity, gas and water companies operate as near-monopolies in defined service areas, with rates set by state regulators and demand that barely moves with the economy. That produces cash flow of unusual predictability, and utilities distribute a large share of it.

The consequence is a sector that behaves less like equity than most equity does. Utility shares tend to move with interest rates rather than with economic growth, because the buyer is largely purchasing an income stream and competing income streams reprice when rates change. When bond yields rise, utility shares typically fall, and their dividend yields rise to compensate — which is why the sector can look cheapest precisely when rates are highest.

Growth is modest and consistent by nature. A regulated utility cannot expand into new markets at will; it grows by investing in its rate base and being permitted a return on that investment. Dividend increases of two to five percent a year are typical, and several utilities hold multi-decade records of consecutive increases.

The main risk is regulatory rather than commercial. A utility whose rate case goes badly, or which faces large mandated capital spending, can find its dividend under pressure without any change in customer demand.

Methodology

Includes US-listed companies classified in the Utilities sector that currently pay a dividend, ranked by trailing twelve-month yield. Exchange-traded funds and mutual funds are excluded. Payout ratios in this sector are typically high relative to other industries because of the capital-intensive, regulated nature of the business.
