About the Monthly Dividend Stocks list

Most US companies pay dividends quarterly. A small group pays every month, and for investors drawing an income from their portfolio that difference is practical rather than cosmetic: twelve payments a year line up with monthly expenses in a way that four do not, and reinvested monthly distributions compound slightly faster than quarterly ones.

The list above ranks the highest paying monthly dividend stocks by trailing twelve-month yield, so the largest current payers appear first. Sort by payout ratio or market cap to reorder it around sustainability or size instead.

The monthly payers are not a random cross-section of the market. They cluster heavily in real estate investment trusts, business development companies, and closed-end funds — structures that are required or strongly incentivised to distribute most of their income, and whose own cash flows arrive monthly in the form of rent or interest. That concentration is worth understanding before building a portfolio around it, because it means a monthly-dividend strategy tends to carry more interest-rate and credit sensitivity than the broad market.

Yields here run higher than the market average, which follows from the same structural facts. Read the payout ratio column with that in mind: for REITs in particular, payout ratios above 100% of earnings are normal rather than alarming, because depreciation charges reduce reported earnings well below the cash the business actually generates.

Methodology

Includes every US-listed security whose most recent regular dividend was classified as monthly by Financial Modeling Prep, taken from actual payment history rather than inferred from the gaps between payments. Ranked by trailing twelve-month yield. Companies that have stopped paying are excluded.

Frequently asked questions

What are the highest paying monthly dividend stocks?
The table above ranks every US-listed monthly payer by trailing twelve-month yield, updated daily. The top of the list is dominated by closed-end credit funds and business development companies, which pay monthly because their own cash flows — interest and rent — arrive monthly. Realty Income is the best-known monthly-paying REIT and sits considerably lower on yield than those funds.
How many stocks pay dividends monthly?
Just over 1,300 US-listed securities currently distribute monthly, against roughly 2,900 paying quarterly. Monthly payers are concentrated in REITs, business development companies and closed-end funds rather than ordinary operating companies, almost none of which pay monthly.
Are monthly dividends better than quarterly?
For income being spent, monthly payments match monthly expenses and remove the need to manage cash between quarterly payments. For income being reinvested, the compounding advantage over quarterly is real but small. The more important consideration is what you are buying: monthly payers carry more interest-rate and credit sensitivity than the broad market because of the structures involved. Holding three quarterly payers on different schedules also produces income every month, from a far wider selection of companies.
